Barnard has previously appeared on television in episodes of BBC programmes Doctors and Casualty before making his West End debut earlier this year in the rock musical Spring Awakening; based on the 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik.
A purpose built castle is being constructed for the movie when shooting begins in South Wales by director Jonathan English, with a US release due in 2010.
The storyline is based on the rebel barons of England in 1215 as they force King John to lay his royal seal to the Magna Carta, only later to renege on his word and form an army on the south coast of England. Barnard has been cast to play a young knight and begins filming in October. Other members of the cast are Paul Giamatti (The Last Station) and James Purefoy (George and the Dragon).
During 2010 Barnard will also be seen on-screen in the movie Powder playing the character Miguel. Based on the novel by Kevin Sampson and directed by Mark Elliot the film is a dark comedy about an emerging band’s experiences in the UK music scene.
